Patent Engineer
We’re looking for a Patent Engineer to drive and embed our innovation process into everyday product development work. This new permanent and full-time role plays a key part in shaping how we protect and develop the intellectual property behind our gaming product platforms, technology platforms and gaming solutions. You’ll work closely with cross-functional product development teams to turn technical work into potential patents and help us secure and grow our competitive edge.
As a Patent Engineer, you’ll be deeply involved in our R&D environment, partnering with engineers, architects, designers, development managers and product managers across multiple teams. Your focus will be to surface innovation, identify patentable concepts, and ensure promising ideas turn into formal patent initiatives. You won’t do this alone – our experienced IPR Manager will support you throughout the process, and we also work with external advisors when needed.
In addition to driving patent creation, you will also contribute to IPR risk mitigation. This includes conducting freedom-to-operate (FTO) analyses, helping ensure we avoid infringement risks in our development work. You’ll monitor patenting activity in the industry and develop strategies to reduce potential IPR exposure as we scale into new markets and product areas.
You will also help ensure that product and project planning processes across Veikkaus include IPR reviews where applicable, identifying opportunities for protection early in the lifecycle. This helps create transparency and makes IPR a natural part of product thinking – not a bolt-on. The exact scope and prioritization of these reviews will be shaped together based on team needs and overall workload.
We expect you to have a strong technical background and practical experience with patents -whether you’ve written them yourself or worked as a catalyst helping others through the process. You understand the rhythm of software and platform development and know how to build trust with engineers to extract the technical essence of what’s being built. Our teams are sharp and fast-moving, so this role requires initiative, pragmatism, and excellent collaboration skills.
As a member of the unit’s steering group, you’ll act as the voice of IPR in key product and technology decisions – helping others understand where protection is possible or where it might be strategically valuable. Depending on your strengths, you may also help shape technology choices that have IP implications or propose directions where novel solutions should be protected early.
You’ll succeed in this role if you have:
- A proactive and hands-on mindset, with the ability to turn loosely defined ideas into patentable concepts
- A strong technical background, with experience collaborating closely with software, platform, or product development teams
- Practical experience with patents – either as a drafter, inventor, or enabler who has successfully guided patent initiatives forward
- Familiarity with IPR processes and the ability to integrate patent thinking into agile development workflows
- Experience or readiness to conduct freedom-to-operate (FTO) analyses and contribute to IPR risk assessment
- Good understanding of international patent systems (particularly EU and US), and how they relate to product and technology development
- Excellent collaboration skills to engage with engineers, product managers, development managers and leadership, and build trust with technical teams
- An ability to recognize patterns of innovation, connect them to business value, and initiate protection where needed
- Willingness to work from our offices in Finland at least twice a week to stay close to teams and R&D activities
- Interest in shaping lightweight tools and ways of working that support patent creation across a modern R&D organization
Joining us means stepping into a collaborative and forward-looking R&D environment that values clarity, autonomy, and accountability. As a Patent Engineer, you’ll have a rare opportunity to shape how intellectual property is identified, created, and valued—directly influencing our ability to compete and grow in international markets.
You’ll work alongside skilled engineers, product teams, and leadership in an organization that trusts experts to lead and provides room to build sustainable ways of working. We offer competitive benefits and support a hybrid working model, allowing for both focused in-office collaboration and flexible remote work. Our head office in Finland provides an engaging and modern workspace to connect with colleagues and stay close to the heart of product development.
