Pixel United, Helsinki  is looking for a Principal QA Lead to join our studio and be part of an exciting new mobile game. The role will offer an opportunity to work with senior team members to create the next success story in mobile gaming. We are looking for a candidate who cares about quality control and is driven to create the best possible experience for the players.

As QA Lead you will provide leadership to the QA team, and be able to use a range of directive and non-directive leadership skills to get the best from the team. You will balance delivering results with caring for the needs of your team. You will motivate and guide others to excellence, acting as a role model for organizational, technical, and creative skills, whilst showing others ‘what good looks like’. You will build, maintain and share a body of expertise concerning all aspects of the project, helping your colleagues understand the systems and concepts they are testing.

Job Purpose:

You will help design and drive the execution of the QA plans, working closely with leads and heads of other disciplines to  formulate the best approach. You will provide hands-on technical and practical QA know-how for client, server and tooling support, and advise the Production team so they can make informed decisions. You will also play a part across the organization working with Principals in other teams to develop QA excellence and promote good practice across the organization.

 Key Roles & Responsibilities:


  • Become the QA expert for a given Project with an emphasis on technical and systems knowledge
  • Be hands-on in execution of test activities and ensure defects are appropriately communicated. This will include taking on features and tests which are technically or practically more challenging
  • Proactively drive tooling support to empower the test team and support live operations
  • Create and maintain test suites and cases, including generating bespoke test plans and identifying opportunities for test optimization
  • Actively participate in requirement and design reviews of upcoming features, communicating what is expected from QA to deliver on said features
  • Identity and present opportunities for process improvements within QA and the development team at large
  • Influence meaningful QA metrics that enable the QA Manager to make decisions that improve product quality

Discipline Leadership

  • Role model and mentor who colleagues can learn from. Go out of your way to ensure everyone is always learning
  • Coordinate with off-shore QA resources, monitoring deliverables and helping to develop and grow the team’s capabilities
  • Be a strong voice for QA in planning sessions and meetings
  • Communicate and/or escalate critical issues and challenges encountered during test execution within the QA team, ensuring Production team and other team members are kept up to date
  • Input towards and influence project-level decisions, best practices and test strategy, proactively challenging conventional wisdom where you see alternatives

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Strong understanding of QA processes, testing terminology, and games development methodology, particularly Agile practices and concepts
  • Experience in supporting live operations
  • Experience testing in an embedded environment and developing innovative solutions to challenges
  • Grasp of technical challenges for mobile games QA e.g. hardware & device fragmentation, server/client architectures, metadata & data versioning, asset systems, metrics & analytics, payments, social features, experiments/cohorts, logging solutions, etc
  • Good quality of reporting and presentation; understanding of key QA metrics to measure success
  • Good inter-personal skills and the ability to work with a variety of individuals
  • Experience in passing on skills, e.g. teaching, mentoring, demonstrations, constructive feedback during reviews, documentation, etc

Desirable Skills

  • Experience working with outsourced teams
  • Familiarity with Unity
