Senior Game Programmer HOUSEMARQUE / Helsinki, Finland

PUBLISHED: May 23, 2022

We are looking for a Senior Game Programmer for our next big game!

As a Senior Game Programmer on the talented and passionate programming team behind RETURNAL you will work closely with a team of game programmers and designers to help drive the next evolution of Housemarque games.

As a Senior Game Programmer your main responsibilities are architecting and implementing gameplay systems, as well as prototyping new gameplay ideas in close collaboration with designers, to help us deliver award-winning gameplay. You will participate in the defining of coding practices and standards, and undertake code reviews to ensure these are followed. You will also be supporting other programmers and designers by providing technical mentorship and constructive feedback. In addition, your responsibilities within the team can be tailored to match your skills and interests.

What will your day-to-day look like?

At Housemarque we work within a continuously improving Large Scale Scrum framework and as a Senior Game Programmer you will have the opportunity to assist with the development of the game in all of the phases of that process. That means having a significant role in the roadmap planning for the team, championing those plans through each of the scrum events and finally bringing them to life during a development sprint.

Your typical day at Housemarque would look something like this:

Arriving at the studio after an easy commute to the core of Helsinki, you grab a morning coffee and chat with colleagues at the kitchen table. Browsing your inbox at your desk, you see an email from the Lead Designer asking for support to design a new Mega Weapon for the next milestone.  You accept a meeting invite for that afternoon to discuss further.

It’s time to dig into your current sprint tasks! After an hour of work with the new melee attack combo system while listening to music it’s time for the daily standup meeting. At the daily you are giving a brief update on how things are progressing towards sprint goals when one of the animators on your team expresses a need of help with the animations that they are currently plugging into the game. On your way back to your desk you offer to go and help with their task that they are struggling with.

Lunchtime! You discuss in a Slack group and decide to go to a favourite restaurant of yours nearby. After lunch you dive back into your tasks before your afternoon meeting with the Lead Designer. In that meeting you come up with some great ideas together that require new features from the weapon system. You are excited to add them into the backlog list and discuss more with the team the following week. Headphones back on, you finish that melee attack combo task before heading home.”

What will help you to be successful in this role?

  • 5+ years of experience working as a programmer within the games industry.
  • At least one shipped game working as a game programmer.
  • Excellent C++ skills.
  • Extensive experience working in a multi-discipline team, with both technical and non-technical members.
  • Fluent written and verbal English skills.

These can further add to your success:

  • Experience with multithreaded programming.
  • Familiarity with common commercial game engines.
  • Experience working on 1st person/3rd person action games.
  • Experience working on AAA retail games.
  • Experience working within an Agile software team structure.
  • Passion in video games.
